-	You are a better programmer than you where a year ago, this is a statement. And it should not be false whether you have worked with programming for 1 year or 30 years.

-	Take a look at code you wrote a year ago. Not because your boss tells you so, not because a new feature require it, but because this will teach you a lot.
-	Before you read this book, before you had experienced all you have the last year. What do you know today that you did not know then?

-	I know for sure that a year ago I knew a lot less than I do now. This fact tells me that I will know a lot less a year from now than I do at this exact moment. And nothing else but your previous code will state this fact better.

-	Experience and evolution makes this a fact. You can read or hear about patterns, you can use the latest technology that exists in the moment, and hopefully you thrive to do your best, but still; the work you do now does not measure up to the standards you have a year from now.

-	This does not mean it is bad code, it does not mean you are not suited for your position; it just means that the industry you work in is not mature. It means that you as a programmer need to evolve to keep up. It means that you as a developer need to learn new things every day and last but not least it means that if you don’t, other people are, and they can take your place in no time.

-	If you look back at your previous work you instantly see the errors, you instantly see the ways things could have been done better. And this is a learning experience. The best solution might not be to write it all over, it might in many cases not even be an option. All we can do is to write the best code we can from the knowledge we have to this date and try to make this code not block the opportunities we might get in the future.

-	It should not be a defeat to be straight forward about this to your customer, to your co-workers or to your boss. It is strength to know about the shortcomings of the past. No matter what, technology develops and if we love our everyday work, we as developers just have to do as well. To recognize the ghosts from the pasts just means that you have become a better programmer. Congratulations!
