Creating a no fake web presence
From Programmer 97-things
Nowadays, a web site is required for every programmer as it enables them to interact with others through comments, discussion forums. It can also be used to post articles, feeds from twitter and much more. But the domain name should be chosen correctly in order for others to spell them without any difficulty. Moreover, visitors will use the domain name to browse sites directly and hence any kind of confusion indirectly affects the analytics.
For instance, the domain, dotnetsharp.com will not be difficult to spell but a name like www.dotnetxpress.com sounds confusing. This is because, a visitor can browse the site by entering dotnetexpress on to the browser instead of the real name dotnetxpress thus causing diversion of web traffic to an unknown site instead of your real domain. The end result of this will be fatal as it will affect not only traffic but also revenues from advertisements.
What to Do - Pick a domain name which is easy to remember and which doesn’t confuse potential visitors.
What not to do - Avoid any name with "X" in the middle. If possible choose a name with two parts for the sake of simplicity.
For my own research experience, a domain name with your first and last name will be a wise choice both in terms of traffic and revenues. It is true that finding a short domain name is difficult but you have to work a little if you want to establish a web presence which can reap rich dividends.
